Unlike most members of the team, Chad Thompson spent each Saturday with a goal of not having his name and number mentioned during the 60 minutes of play. Because for an offensive lineman, that usually means you are being flagged for a penalty.
Even though linemen don’t have individual stats to point to, that didn’t mean that Chad went unnoticed or failed to make an impact on the gridiron. He spent his career frustrating opposing defenses that were looking to slow down the Bearcats. Despite the lack of recognition in game, the powerful offensive guard did have his name called multiple times when it mattered most in the form of accolades like first team all MIAA and multiple All-America honors during his career.
The Bearcat offenses of his time could do it all – piling up yards on the ground and through the air…it wasn’t rare to see their point totals in the 40s and 50s. Whether it was opening holes for the running backs or providing time for the quarterbacks to pick apart the defense, you can be sure it was thanks, in large part, to the unsung work of Chad and his fellow offensive linemen.
The Lexington, Missouri native is part of an exclusive group of Bearcat student-athletes that can list four MIAA titles and two National Championships on their resume.
