College tennis teams experience the most success when they are able to find a mix of strong singles and doubles play. The 2009-2010 men’s tennis team certainly followed that recipe on their way to a record breaking season.
The importance of a strong start is a key in every sport. This Bearcat team set the tone early and often in doubles action, holding an advantage in 22 of the 27 matches that season. In fact, 11 times they concluded doubles play with an overwhelming three-to-zero lead. On the rare occasion they were down after doubles action, they had more than enough firepower on the singles front to overcome that deficit.
They had a stretch in the regular season of sheer domination. Winning 14 out of 15 contests from late March to early May that propelled them to an MIAA regular season title – the program’s first in eight years.
There were superior individual performances as well led by conference player of the year Malcolm Harrison and first team singles All-MIAA performers Felipe Gennari, Calvin Patterson, Ryan Weterhof and Giocanni Auricchio. In fact, Harrison and Gennari recorded two of the top six single season wins totals in program history.
They breezed through the MIAA tournament and then it was on to the NCAA Championships. After defeating No. 21-ranked Cameron University for the second time that year in the first round of the South Central Regional, the season would come to a close at the hands of No. 16 St. Edward’s in a close 5-4 defeat. The 22 total victories on the season are a men’s program record and their 79 combined doubles wins are tops in school history.
